A GENERAL FRAMEWORK FOR GRAIN BLENDING AND SEGREGATION AgEcon
Sivaraman, Eswar; Lyford, Conrad P.; Brorsen, B. Wade.
The Hennessy and Wahl model of optimal grain blending and segregation (GBS) is extended to the case where it is not possible to separate components within a load. Analytical solutions are not available when segregation is the optimal strategy, and so solutions are obtained with nonlinear optimization. The model is then used to determine the optimal sorting of hard red winter wheat by protein content. Most of the benefits from sorting can be obtained with only two bins.

An Equilibrium Model of Sorting in an Urban Housing Market: The Causes and Consequences of Residential Segregation AgEcon
Bayer, Patrick; McMillan, Robert; Rueben, Kim.
This paper presents a new equilibrium framework for analyzing economic and policy questions related to the sorting of households within a large metropolitan area. We estimate the model using restricted-access Census data that precisely characterize residential and employment locations for households the San Francisco Bay Area, yielding accurate measures of preferences for a wide variety of housing and neighborhood attributes across different types of household. We use these estimates to explore the causes and consequences of racial segregation in general equilibrium. Our results indicate that, given the preference structure of households in the Bay Area, the elimination of racial differences in income and wealth would significantly increase the residential...

COOPERATIVE MARKETING IN SPECIALTY GRAINS AND IDENTITY PRESERVED GRAIN MARKETS AgEcon
Janzen, Edward L.; Wilson, William W..
Marketing of specialty and identity preserved grains has become an important strategy in the grain marketing industry and is being driven, in part, by consumer and processor demand and an interest in non-GM products. This study provides background and practices of numerous organizations involved in marketing of specialty/identity preserved grains. Supporting marketing activities are reviewed. Key factors in the success (or failure) of their efforts are identified. Major challenges facing the participants in the specialty/IP grain marketing industry are discussed. The primary focus is on the role of agricultural cooperatives and producer owned alliances.

Cost and benefits for the segregation of GM and non-GM compound feed AgEcon
Gryson, N.; Eeckhout, M.; Neijens, T..
Measures are being developed and implemented enabling the co-existence of conventional, genetically modified (GM) and organic cropping systems. In order to segregate GM from conventional crops in the entire supply chain, a food or feed company has to reorganise its production. This may involve for dedication of the production line to non-GM, or production can be organised on the same plant, using spatial or temporal segregation. In practice, only the latter method is used in the feed industry, as no investments in new machinery are necessary in the case. The segregation and identity preservation of GM and non-GM crops has to be well organised. An important tools used to proof the identity of the imported raw materials is the batch or product declaration...

COSTS AND RISKS OF TESTING AND SEGREGATING GM WHEAT AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L..
Development of genetically modified crops is challenging the functions of the grain marketing system with many participants arguing for Identity Preservation systems prior to release of GM varieties. In this study, a stochastic optimization model was developed to determine optimal testing strategies. The model chooses the optimal testing strategy that maximizes utility (minimizes disutility) of additional system costs due to testing and rejection and allows estimation of the risk premium required for sellers to undertake a dual marketing system with GM/Non-GM segregations over the current Non-GM system. Elements of costs (testing costs, rejection costs, and risk premium) were estimated for a base model representing a grain export chain. The model...

Distribution of aflatoxins in contaminated corn fractions segregated by size BJM
Piedade,Fabiana S.; Fonseca,Homero; Glória,Eduardo M.; Calori-Domingues,Antonia; Piedade,Sônia M.S.; Barbin,Décio.
The efficiency of segregation, by particle size, in reducing the aflatoxin content of corn lots under the Brazilian conditions was studied. The aflatoxin content, in the corn fractions obtained after sieving thirty contaminated samples, with approximately 3.0 kg each, was determined. The samples were passed through 4.5 mm round-hole sieves and the fractions with particles ³4.5 mm (fraction A) and <4.5 mm (fraction B) and then analyzed for aflatoxins by TLC. The results showed that the distribution of the aflatoxins among the fractions A and B varied from sample to sample. However, the fraction B presented higher content (6 to 1,422 µg/kg) of aflatoxins (P<5%), than samples of fraction A (4 to 389 µg/kg). In spite of that the segregation of this...

From Segregation to the Equality of Opportunity - The Chances of the Gypsy Children in the World of the Hungarian Education System AgEcon
Csillei, Bela.
According to the previous EU reports about Hungary: "the officially acknowledged 12 minorities integrated into the Hungarian society, the situation of the Hungarian gypsy minority remains difficult. The territorial layout of the gypsy population is more or less matched by the rural areas, where high rate of unemployment, segregation, inner peripherial situation, and limitless social conflicts are present. In order to meet the above mentioned social-economic challenges it is important that the channels of the improving of cultural capital should run parallel with the characteristics of the local societies. It is important, that with the help of the educational mobilisation programmes the difficulties surfacing due to the social coexistence can be decreaded...

Genetic linkage maps of 'Pêra' sweet orange and 'Cravo' mandarin with RAPD markers PAB
Oliveira,Roberto Pedroso de; Cristofani,Mariângela; Machado,Marcos Antônio.
The objective of this work was to construct linkage maps of 'Pêra' sweet orange [Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck] and 'Cravo' mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) using RAPD markers and the pseudo-testcross strategy. The parents were chosen according to the resistance/susceptibility to citrus variegate chlorosis (CVC). The segregation of 176 markers was analyzed in 94 progeny of F1 hybrids, which were obtained from controlled crossings. The linkage map of 'Pêra' sweet orange had 117 markers defined by 12 linkage groups, which spanned 612.1 cM. Only six markers could not be linked to the linkage group and 48.7% of the markers showed segregation distortion. The linkage map of 'Cravo' mandarin had 51 markers defined by 12 linkage groups, which spanned 353.3 cM....

Genetically Modified Food and International Trade: The Case of India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines AgEcon
Gruere, Guillaume P.; Bouet, Antoine; Mevel, Simon.
Genetically modified (GM) food crops have the potential to raise agricultural productivity in Asian countries, but they are also associated with the risk of market access losses in sensitive importing countries. We study the potential effects of introducing GM food crops in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and the Philippines in the presence of trade-related regulations of GM food in major importers. We focus on GM field crops (rice, wheat, maize, soybeans, and cotton) resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses, such as drought-resistant rice, and use a multi-country, multi-sector computable general equilibrium model. We build on previous international simulation models by improving the representation of the productivity shocks associated with GM crops, and by...

Geometric morphometrics of Aedes aegypti populations and study of transmission of arboviral diseases in Barreiras, Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Arcanjo,Danielle Beatriz Marques Campos; Vidal,Paloma Oliveira; Santos,José Yure Gomes dos; Venancio,Larissa Paola Rodrigues; Suesdek,Lincoln; Amorim,Jaime Henrique.
Abstract Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (A. aegypti) transmits arboviral diseases of high public health importance, including those caused by Zika virus (ZIKV), Dengue virus (DENV), Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Yellow fever virus (YFV). Barreiras is a city with 157,638 inhabitants in the West of the State of Bahia, Northeast of Brazil. The climate is dry, with well-determined and concentrated seasons of rains. The city is crossed by a Federal Highway and by the Rio Grande river. In this study, we aimed to understand the dynamics of mosquito vectors and arboviral diseases in Barreiras. We used correlation statistics to investigate a possible relationship among rains, mosquito abundance and transmission of diseases. In addition, as a preliminary population...

GM technology and the Australian canola AgEcon
Taing, William; Ahmadi-Esfahani, Fredoun Z..
In this paper, we use a simulation model to measure the potential market and welfare effects of recently introduced genetically modified (GM) canola in Australia. The short-run results indicate that non-GM canola may emerge as a niche product commanding a premium. In the long run, GM technology appears to enhance aggregate welfare. However, when production cost savings are trivial and consumers become highly concerned about GM food products, aggregate welfare may decline. The policy implications of the analysis are explored.
